1977's What A Night was Tom Jones second LP after switching to the Epic Label a year earlier, after a decade long relationship with London Records (Parrot Label in the US). Jones first Epic release, Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow gave Jones his best selling album release in 5 years and put him back in the US Top 20 with title track as the album's lead single (US #15, Feb 1977). That single also opened Jones up to country radio, gaining significant airplay and eventually topping the US Country Singles Charts (Making Jones the first artist ever to hit #1 with their debut country chart hit). What A Night follows a similar path as it's predecessor, mostly middle of the road pop, some with more country oriented arrangements.Highlights include the title track, a fun, uptempo, dance friendly Country Pop number playing up Jones image as a ladies man, albeit a struggling one in this particularly story song. "No One Gave Me Love", another single release, plays to Jones strengths as an emotive balladeer with more than a few big voiced flourishes in the bridge. "if This Is Love", a remake, is even more done in the power ballad style and again is a highlight. Most of the ballads are more Top 40 sound wise, the country arrangements come into play during the uptempo numbers, of which there are few. Overall, this is a fun 70's pop album, it's not among Jones's best work from the first half of his career, lacking the versatility in song styles and vocal performances that made prior albums such as I (Who Have Nothing), She's A Lady, Green, Green Grass of Home, Fever Zone, Live in London, and Live In LAs Vegas so enjoyable. However, if you were a fan of Jones prior albums like the ones listed then you'll likely enjoy this, especially if you can get it for an affordable price. If you were a fan of the 70's Country-politan sound populated by cross over artists who dominated both the Top 40 Pop Charts & Country Charts during the era, artists such as Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, Glenn Campbell, Eddie Rabbitt, etc then you will also enjoy this disc.
