Product Description

Even the mysterious world of Harmony has people who don’t quite fit in. They’re drawn to places like Rainshadow Island, a beautiful sanctuary where anyone can feel safe—and where secrets are closely guarded... Schooled in an exotic form of martial arts, and with the ability to detect the auras of dangerous psychic criminals, Rachel Bonner and her dust bunny companion have found peace and quiet on Rainshadow Island, operating a bookstore and café. But her tranquil new life is thrown into chaos when Harry Sebastian, the descendant of a notorious pirate, arrives to investigate strange developments in the privately owned woods known as the Preserve. Immediately drawn to the amber-eyed woman, Harry must tread carefully. While Rachel’s special talents can help him track down dangerous rogues who have violated the Preserve, they can also sense the heart of darkness within him. But desire can weaken the strongest of defenses—and leave even the strongest man wanting more…

This is a typical book for Jayne Castle/Krentz/Quick and it was enjoyable. I like her characters and the stories she tells. Is it new and different - No. Am I disappointed - No, I know what to expect. I looked at some of the reviews and was amazed that anyone could be disappointed! I've read everything she writes and the heroines and heroes are all the same, the women are independent, don't fit into the usual mold and are not hysterical ninnies that scream when things go bad and things always go badly at some point in the story. The men are not usually drop dead handsome, they are a bit disillusioned and considered dangerous and feel they will never find the right woman. How could anyone expect new and different? This is why I read Ms. Castle and a large number of romance authors in addition to her. This is her niche and the fact that she could extend it to Regency/Victorian; Contemporary and Futuristic is fantastic. I like what she has to say and how she says it. I depend on her to give me a great love story with a little danger mixed in and she always delivers. Somehow I always feel that these are just regular people who meet and fall in love and you know that they will still be in love years later.Rachel and Sebastian are great characters, they have both realized that they don't fit the "normal" mold and are determined to live life in their own way and find a place for that life. Is this an enduring life changing novel - no but I will enjoy reading it again and the characters will still be liked and enjoyable. The dust bunnies are great, I like the mixed animals she creates and the personality she gives them.I would also like to point out that the stories all tie together the paranormal world, whether in Victorian England, Present day or the future world of Harmony. I'm sure there will be more stories where objects from the past end up in Harmony - I look forward to reading about them - there has to be something going on with those rocks! Love it!Finally, I read the comment about 5 star reviewers being "shills" - I had rated this a 4 star but when I read the 2 and 3 star rating, I decided to post a 5 also I didn't describe the story, because so many others do. I did question the Martial Arts comment but its also in Amazon's description and I did remember the move at the end of the book - I don't really consider that martial arts.
