Product Description

Hong Kong crime thriller. In the over-populated Mongkok district of Hong Kong, where life is regulated by the notorious Triad gangs, two young men are involved in a car accident which kills one of them. Unfortunately, both boys are the sons of two Triad bosses, and inexperienced hitman Lai Fu (Daniel Wu) is dispatched to kill the surviving boy and his father. Totally unprepared for the violence that is about to descend on him, Lai Fu's mission is further complicated by his concern for call girl Dan (Cecilia Cheung), a naive young woman from his home province who is desperate to escape Hong Kong.

Yes another great action, thriller from Hong Kong, and they do make these things so well. This all starts when a street tussle between two rival gangs gets out of hand. A car chase ensues and one of the gang leader's sons gets toasted. The grieving father decides that he wants his `brother' and rival taken out, and I don't mean to a reasonably priced buffet. So enter portly fixer of all things bad Liu, he and his thoroughly unpleasant wife hire a country hick from their home village in China. The inexperienced Lai Fu (Daniel Wu) arrives on the island and gets his instructions, cash, phone and used hand gun. Meanwhile the police are preparing for the Christmas holidays, but as events are hotting up on the street they hear about the hired killer and start a man hunt with all leave cancelled - so emotions are running high. Before the night is out Liu has double crossed Lai Fu, he has rescued a prostitute from a very nasty punter and they have taken off together. The police are up to their own shenanigans and every body seems to have gotten tooled up.This is a stylish and stylised film that starts out in black and white and then crashes into colour, some of the shots are almost art house in their execution and director Tung-Shing Yee has elicited excellent performances from everyone, even the part players. There are enough plot turns to keep even a cynic happy and the action is all believable and whilst bordering on gratuitous, never actually gets that far.The music is all great too and some well placed comic touches. I am a fan of this genre and this only adds to the great catalogue that is already out there, I just wish I had seen it sooner.
