Detective Sergeant Emma Woodstock has recently transferred to a precinct in Melbourne, Australia. She is partnered with DS Nick Fleet who is sarcastic and difficult to get along with. They are assigned to the case of a murdered homeless man. There are very few clues and no seeming motive to the crime. Then high profile celebrity actor Sterling Wade is killed in the middle of a crowded movie scene and Gemma and Nick are moved to the case. They discover he was stabbed in the heart, the exact same way the homeless man was murdered.Trying to connect the cases is almost impossible, who would have a reason to kill them both? This dark police procedural crime fiction was a bit slow moving and there was some repetition to the story. But the characters were so complex and intriguing and that made the book more compelling.Gemma has a dark side to her, drinking too much and having sex with strangers. She left her young son in the care of her ex when she moved to Melbourne and she has a lot of guilt over it.But she focuses on her case with dedication and insight. And as she sifts through the clues, she begins to penetrate secrets that will help reveal the killer. This is the second in the series, looking forward to reading more about this fascinating character.
