Having left behind the melodrama of her solitary high school days—and the beheaded martyrs in her paintings—Ellie arrives at the New England College of Art and Design. Looking forward to the opportunity to recreate herself and her art, she begins her first day by dirty dancing with the Devil. Then she makes out with him. Ellie soon learns a lot about herself in this story about independence, trust, and boys.
I've been searching for Hilary Frank's Better than Running at Night for years. I couldn't find it at new, old, or used bookstores; in public libraries; or even at yard sales. So I looked on Amazon.com, and there it was. I could've bought it for cheaper than the shipping price, but I figured that if I was going to own it, I wanted it new. I have read it at least five or six times, and it never gets old. Frank's writing style is fresh and realistic; the voice of the main character, Ellie, is believable, interesting and endearing. As it says on the back cover, the reader worries for Ellie throughout her struggles in the novel. Anyone who likes art or artsy folks will appreciate Ellie's view of the world. I highly recommend the novel.
