Review "King s mix is after-hours bliss, with warm textures of melody and soul that separates him from many of his contemporaries." -- XLR8R Magazine"The set s tropical vibe and Latin influence is the perfect soundtrack for hot summer nights...addictively danceable and seductive." -- NBC News (Florida) About the Artist This edition of Late Night has been compiled and mixed by the legendary King Britt. King is a true visionary and has become synonymous with all things soulful, rhythmically textured and melodically provocative. In the last decade, Britt has become an influential musical auteur whose vast knowledge of many varied musical styles has established him as a preeminent global musical ambassador whose future-forward sound explores deep house, hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, cosmic funk, afro-tech, vintage 80s and classic soul. Kings musical ascent began in 1992 as the wax poet for the Grammy Award-winning quartet Digable Planets. Hailing from Philadelphia, a city rich with musical heritage and home to seminal artists like Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, The Roots, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Musiq and Ursula Rucker and of course the "Philladelphia Sound" created by producers Gamble and Huff, Britt absorbed the many styles and grooves of the soul music metropolis to create his own unique stamp. Early in his solo DJ career, King forged a partnership with Josh Wink (the well-known New York DJ, producer and owner of Ovum Recordings), since then, this multi-faceted artist has built a prolific career expertly juggling multiple roles as a pioneering producer, remixer, musical curator, DJ, label head and prominent tastemaker. As a remixer, Britt is ranked among the top notch, most sought after remixers in the world. He has flipped and funked remixes for a dizzying array of artists from 4 Hero, I:Cube, UFO, Josh One, Macy Gray, Tori Amos and Yoko Ono to Femi Kuti, Jody Watley, Curtis Mayfield, The OJays, Destinys Child, Everything But the Girl and Chic. As a solo producer, hes steadily sharpened and solidified his revolutionary musical mélange working under various aliases including Firefly and Scuba. It is under his Scuba name that he delivers the beautiful "Love Is The Answer" single on this Late Night mix. In 1996, Kings Sylk130 collective (a superlative ensemble of Philadelphia musicians and performers featuring Ursula Rucker, Alma Horton and Alison Crocket) released their successful debut When the Funk Hits the Fan. A tribute to the funkified Philly soul of the 70s, the album was followed by the 2001 sophomore release Re-Members Only, which paid homage to the dance music of the 80s. ! A third and final installment is eagerly awaited. In 2002, King Britt collaborated with Nigerian born producer Oba Funke to create Cosmo Afrique to fashion an album of original Afro-tech productions featuring the vocals of Soul II Souls Wumni, Zap Mama and Diva Blue. In March 2003, he returned to his hip-hop roots with Adventures in Lo-Fi, an album of original tracks for the highly acclaimed BBE Records Beat Generation Series featuring lyricists Butterfly, Quasimoto and Bahamadia dropping serious licks over interplanetary beats. And as if thats not enough, when hes not in the studio or DJing around the world, the seemingly tireless global musical ambassador can be found at the office of FiveSixMedia, his multi-media studio and marketing company. As he continues to reinvent and reshape the sound of music and pop culture in the 21st century, theres no limit to what King Britt will do next. See more
