The foundation of rhythm & blues was set during the war years. Big bands were stripped down to smaller horn lead combos driven by a jumping rhythm section tailor-made for dancing. In this setting the "blues shouter" was an absolute necessity. While Big Joe Turner is the father of the style, the flamboyant Wynonie Harris popularized the shouter's role as a leather-lunged hell raiser. Two singers followed in Harris' footsteps: Piney Brown & Eddie Mack. This 22 track collection from 1948-50 contains 7 never before released cuts, and features Willis Jackson & Bobby Smith.
Hoot and holler saturday night! Someone has to use this songs as a theme song for their staurday night blues show. I just picked this up today and it's a great representation of late 40's/early 50's rocking R&B.Although neither artist would be considered giants of the R&B of the time, they both deliver the goods. The bands are well oiled and tight and you'll definately have your feet tapping while listening to this disc. As the above description mentions, both Willis Jackson and Bobby Smith play on these dates, but so does another giant of the swing era, Julian Dash. He's well known for his work with Erskine Hawkins band.If you love early R&B or just want to dig back to the beginnings or rock and roll, this will be a good addition to your collection.
