A Blue Note essential, A Night At Birdland by the Art Blakey Quintet is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary LP reissue campaign - featuring 100 titles - Key to the initiative is high quality audio at affordable prices- Also available this month on LP: Bobby Hutcherson's Components, Grant Green's I Want To Hold Your Hand, Lee Morgan's Search For The New Land and Medeski Martin & Wood's End Of The World Party (Just In Case)
Another absolute delight from Blue Note. From the now-iconic intro many Gen-X'ers know and love from Us3's Cantaloop leading in to Split Kick, where you can almost get a sense of new bop dimensions being invented before a live audience. While the recording is lovely, you have to keep in mind the limitations of technology available for capturing a live performance in the middle of the 1950's. Blue Note has once again pulled a rabbit out of their hat with the mastering of this album -- especially if you're lucky enough to own the original release, for a critical comparison. Relative to many of Blue Note's vinyl re-releases, you'll notice a pronounced lack of detail in this recording. That's hardly disappointing. The only real disappointment is having to wait until August for A Night at Birdland Vol 2 to get the same treatment from the Blue Note 75 Anniversary Initiative.
